Turmeric supports digestion during indigestion, softens and cleanses the skin, counteracts microbes, helps with sore throats, chronic coughs, gall bladder problems, purifies the blood, helps with arthritis and rheumatic problems, inflammation of the intestine and stomach ulcers, allergies and anaemia, regenerates the liver, improves diabetes, haemorrhoids, lowers cholesterol. It is a powerful antioxidant.

Like ginger, turmeric is a tuber that varies in colour from deep orange to reddish brown, but when dried and ground into a powder it is always bright yellow. It is used in small quantities to add a fresh, vibrant flavour and aroma to vegetables, soups and chutneys, or to colour rice. Ground turmeric holds its colouring properties for a long time but quickly loses its aroma. It should be cooked carefully because it burns easily.

Use

Stir into the dish during cooking. Suitable for legumes.
